Airspace Management Planning Charts (ASM)

The Airspace Management Planning Charts (ASM) depict the implementation of the Flexible Use of Airspace (FUA) concept in the European Upper Airspace.

Additional Airspace information, such as the Flight Information Region (FIR/UIR) and the Area Control Center (ACC) are also represented on the ASM charts.

Flexible Use of Airspace Concept

The European Air Traffic Management (EATM) concept of the Flexible Use of Airspace (FUA) was implemented on 28 March 1996 and is applied in most of the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) States.

The FUA concept is based on the potential offered by the release of unused military Airspace to provide new or adaptable Airspace structures and procedures that are especially suited to temporary utilization on a daily basis. Airspace allocation is the responsibility of the national Airspace Management Cells (AMCs) :
  • Conditional Routes (CDRs) are established through areas of potential segregation to complement the Air Traffic Services (ATS) route network,
  • Temporary Segregated Areas (TSAs) supplement or replace, when possible, former Danger or Restricted Areas,
  • Cross-Border Areas (CBAs) are temporary TSAs established over international boundaries,
  • Reduced Co-ordination Airspace (RCAs) enable General Air Traffic (GAT) to operate outside the ATS route structure without controllers being required to initiate co-ordination.
