To avoid ambiguity in the exchange of Surveillance related data, each system using the ASTERIX data format gets assigned a unique identifier composed of two values call "SAC/SIC".
The System Area Code (SAC) is centrally maintained by the RDE-TF and allocated to a specific region, usually a country. Multiple allocations within a country are possible, for instance to distinguish between different data suppliers. Considering the limited number of available SACs, multiple allocations need to be handled with utmost care and cannot be guaranteed.
The System Identification Code (SIC) is allocated nationally by the responsible Air Traffic Services Organisation. It identifies each individual system (surveillance sensor, surveillance data processing system, etc) within the respective area defined by the SAC.
For each SAC, up to 256 individual SICs may be assigned.
