Support to air traffic management security
EUROCONTROL supports international and national authorities, as well as SESAR projects in identifying appropriate solutions for air traffic management (ATM) security in Europe.
A sufficient level of security is vital for global and European air transport to appropriately protect citizens and goods from any kind of criminal or terrorist attack.
To determine a sufficient level of security depends on the actual threat scenario and can heavily impact normal life conditions. It is the responsibility of the relevant international and national civil and military authorities to implement the appropriate security measures in response to the actual threat scenario.
With regard to air transport, the three major areas of concern are: the security of airspace, ATM (air traffic management) systems, and CNS (communication, navigation and surveillance systems).
Close civil-military cooperation is a mandatory requirement to ensure the best possible level of security in these areas.
Activities in this area include:
- Airspace Security Action Plan: progressed in the context of the NATO EUROCONTROL ATM Security Coordinating Group (NEASCOG);
- Air navigation services security: progressed in the context of the EUROCONTROL ATM Security Team (SET);
- Contributions to the SESAR programme: security coordination function, security framework, SWIM (System Wide Information Management) security, ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast) security, etc;
- Institutional support to the: European Commission (EC), International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC), European Defence Agency (EDA) and EUROCONTROL Member States.
