Support to air traffic management network coordination
Flexible use of airspace and airspace management coordination between civil and military airspace users are important contributors to a well-functioning European air traffic management (ATM) network, as both need sufficient amounts of airspace.
However, airspace is a finite resource that is facing a continuously growing air traffic demand. Airspace needs to be jointly shared between civil and military users to enable both to fulfil their requirements through effective Flexible Use of Airspace (FUA).
To accommodate this, appropriate civil-military airspace management (ASM) provisions have to be in place.
We support Member States, European network management and respective SESAR projects in developing, implementing and conducting FUA and ASM in civil-military collaboration for the benefit of both.
Activities in this regard include:
- Local And sub-Regional ASM support system (LARA)
- Civil-military collaborative decision-making support (MILO function)
- Civil-military Airspace Coordination Tool (CIMACT)
- Civil-military IFR Traffic interoperability and coordination (OAT-Transit Service, OAT-IFR Flight Plan integration)
- FUA and ASM developments
R&D activities for the SESAR programme are conducted to improve the development of the mission trajectory. This will reflect the military requirement for management of a 4D trajectory.
