A passion for performance

The Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre (MUAC) is committed to offering its customers and the community at large the best quality services at the lowest possible price.

For several years in a row, independent benchmarks have confirmed MUAC’s ranking among the top performing air navigation service providers in Europe. Support costs per flight-hour are among the lowest in Europe.

More details on performance (.ppt)

MUAC’s strong performance is mainly driven by high air traffic controller productivity which is supported by the most advanced technology available, efficient operational processes and its multinational air traffic management concept.

Punctuality

99.7% of the flights using MUAC’s services currently travel without any air traffic control-related delay. The average delay per flight currently stands at 0.05 minutes (June 2011).

Cost-effectiveness

With an economic gate-to-gate cost effectiveness indicator of EUR 261 per composite flight-hour, MUAC is one of the most cost-effective air navigation service providers in Europe. The European system average stands at EUR 492. The cost-effectiveness indicator in Europe ranges from EUR 163 to EUR 837 (Source: ATM Cost Effectiveness 2009 Benchmarking Report, June 2011).

Currently, the total economic cost per flight-hour stands at EUR 257 (June 2011).

Controller productivity

The productivity of an air navigation service provider is a key parameter which contributes directly to its overall performance.

In spite of high traffic density, dense climbing and descending air traffic patterns and airspace complexity, MUAC records the highest controller productivity among Europe’s 37 air navigation service providers, i.e. 1.83 composite flight-hours per controller hour. The European average stands at 0.73 (Source: ATM Cost Effectiveness 2009 Benchmarking Report, June 2011).

Productivity improvements can be achieved by optimising air traffic management and human resources and by using advanced technology to support this process.

Annual costs and route charges

In 2010, MUAC’s annual costs amounted to EUR 139 million while the annual route charges generated in the same year amounted to EUR 402 million. MUAC’s costs amount to 1.8% of the European total ATM costs.
