MUAC activities

40 years of multinational airspace management

The Maastricht Upper Area Control Centre (MUAC) provides cross-border air traffic control services in the upper airspace (above 24,500 feet, or 7,500 metres) of Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and north-west Germany.

Operational since 1972, MUAC controls some 1.5 million flights per year in one of the most dense and complex and most complex areas in the world.

The lower airspace (from level 0 to 24,500 feet) is managed by Belgocontrol, Luchtverkeersleiding Nederland and Deutsche Flugsicherung.

With years of experience in multinational air traffic management, exceptional performance and a constant drive to move beyond boundaries, MUAC plays a key role in building a unified airspace network.

At MUAC, the airspace is organised on a European rather than a national basis, according to the operational requirements of traffic flows.

Today, such large-scale multinational airspace management is still unique in Europe. It is a perfect example of functional airspace integration, leading to major safety and efficiency gains.

At Maastricht, the Single European Sky is already a reality.
