Beyond SESAR

The publication in June 2011 by Commissioners Kallas and Geoghegan Quinn of the « Flightpath 2050 » Vision emphasised the need for a sustainable approach to research and innovation, with the aim to develop an integrated transport system responding to society’s needs in Europe.

After almost a decade of concerted research toward the 2020 targets, and subsequent to a number of significant events affecting the European aeronautics and air transport sector, the Flightpath 2050 report, together with the Transport White Paper, effectively sets new challenges that the aviation community needs to address over the next decades.

Since its launch in 2001, the Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe (ACARE) has provided independent strategic advice to carry forward research in Aeronautics and Air Transport through the Strategic Research Agenda.

We, at EUROCONTROL, are strongly involved in research & development aiming at creating a harmonised global aviation system dedicated to meet future societal and market needs, with particular emphasis upon safety and environmental responsibility.

Our participation in ACARE is a valuable channel to provide inspiration for future-generations of air transport systems.

Through our involvement, we provide support in:

  • identifying and implementing mechanisms which aim to ensure an efficient and productive innovation lifecycle;
  • fostering creativity, cohesion and collaboration while facilitating the delivery of cutting edge ATM products and services;
  • transforming the broader aviation picture into a coherent framework to serve as basis for future European and national aviation research programmes.

This engagement highlights our commitment and support to the European Union and all our stakeholders in the development of a Strategic Research and Innovation roadmap for European aviation research.
