All Purpose Structured EUROCONTROL Surveillance Information Exchange (ASTERIX) specification

EUROCONTROL Specification for All Purpose Structured EUROCONTROL Surveillance Information Exchange (ASTERIX) – PUBLISHED

ASTERIX is the EUROCONTROL Standard for the exchange of Surveillance related data.

ASTERIX provides a structured approach to a message format to be applied in the exchange of surveillance related information for various applications. Managed by the ASTERIX Maintenance Group (AMG) with its multinational participation, it ensures a common data representation, thereby facilitating the exchange of surveillance data in an international context.

ASTERIX also defines a structured approach to the encoding of surveillance data. Categories group the information related to a specific application. They consist of a number of data items which are defined in the ASTERIX documents down to the bit-level.

This EUROCONTROL specification describes the basic rules and procedures to be applied when implementing the ASTERIX data format for the transmission of surveillance related information. It provides information on the way ASTERIX data is organised, defines the structure of ASTERIX messages and specifies the format conventions to be respected when composing ASTERIX records.

Finally the ASTERIX addressing scheme is defined as well as the procedure to be followed in the evolution of ASTERIX Category definitions.

The EUROCONTROL ASTERIX Specification supports the Surveillance Performance and Interoperability requirements implementing rule (Regulation (EU) N° 1207/2011) Article 5(1) and Annex III.

The EUROCONTROL ASTERIX Specification has been submitted to a formal written consultation from 15th May 2012 to 13th July 2012, using the mechanisms of the EUROCONTROL Notice of Proposed Rule-Making (ENPRM) process.

All comments received have been reviewed, appropriate responses made and actions taken. The summary of Responses (SOR) document detailing a summary of the comments and their associated responses is available below.

The EUROCONTROL Standard for Surveillance Data Exchange – Part 1 All Purpose Structured EUROCONTROL Surveillance Information Exchange (ASTERIX) SUR.ET1.ST05.2000-STD-01-01 was released in 1997 and together with its detailed categories has been extensively implemented by the European ATM community as well as outside Europe, becoming the de-facto worldwide standard for the exchange of surveillance information.

In line with the normal maintenance cycle of the document, the standard has now been transposed into a EUROCONTROL Specification, in accordance with the principles of the EUROCONTROL Regulatory and Advisory Framework (ERAF).
