Airport integration into the network

It has been a priority of the DMEAN programme to establish a more effective and improved interface between airports and the European ATM system.

A key enabler for a closer integration of network and airport operations is the implementation of Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM). A-CDM improves ATFCM at airports by reducing delays and improving the predictability and efficiency. It allows each partner to optimise decisions in collaboration with other partners, knowing their preferences and constraints as well as the actual and planned future situation.

The A-CDM project aims to improve the overall efficiency of operations at the airport, with a particular focus on the aircraft turn-round and pre-departure sequence.

Paris Charles de Gaulle reports savings of 14.5 tonnes of fuel per day and adherence to slot departure times for more than 90% of flights (marking a 10% improvement on previous performance) and a further reduction of about 7% in average taxi times.

In Belgium, Brussels Airport reports reduced taxi-out time by a quarter, and cut taxi-in time 15% since it introduced Airport-Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM). Fuel savings for the airlines amount to 7,200 tons a year, while reducing carbon emissions by 22,700 tons and nitrogen oxide by 30 tons.

In 2011, Madrid and Palma Mallorca in Spain, both signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that commits stakeholders to accelerate the activity. Kiev/Borispol in Ukraine did the same and says it will complete the process ahead of the kick-off for EURO 2012 in June 2012 despite beginning the process only two years’ ago.

Next on the list, airports including Rome/Fiumicino in Italy and Lyon in France are close behind Heathrow and Amsterdam in completing the necessary milestones. Other airports that signed MoUs in 2011 include Manchester, Budapest, Stockholm, Istanbul/Atatürk, Rome Fiumicino, and Lyon.
