Current and Future Principles and Criteria

The detailed Principles and Criteria for en-route Airspace Design are laid out in Section-4 of the EUROCONTROL Manual of Airspace Planning.

The current development process (2004-2007) additionally adopted and employed the Advance Airspace Scheme (AAS) Concept.

The objective of AAS is to develop an airspace capable of greater flexibility and responsiveness that will permit the aircraft operators to plan and fly their preferred route. This choice is supplemented by re-routing schemes that follow pre-defined scenarios that optimise the available capacity when planned routes conflict with Air Traffic Control (ATC) sector capacity limits

Through AAS the development of the airspace structure will enable dynamic and flexible capacity management through re-routeing, to be executed at the strategic, pre-tactical and tactical levels.
